On 26th May, 1916, 3rd London of 167 Brigade, 56th Division, left their billets in St Amand and moved to Hebuterne to dig a new front line for the forthcoming Somme offensive. The work was of course to be done at night so during the day they were resting. One party of men, who were to provide cover for the men doing the digging, were in nearby Sailly-au-Bois on the afternoon of 26th May when a shell hit their billets and caused 12 casualties. As their were no casualties among the digging parties that night it is most likely that James Norman, who died of wounds on 29th May, was among these casualties.
